For years, many of Boker customers have been interested in their extraordinary collectible knife, the Boker Tirpitz Damascus. Its popularity convinced them to develop another model featuring the historic Damascus steel. The Boker Tirpitz Damascus Wood is approximately 0.15″ thick with a much flatter construction. Its much more elegant lines are enhanced by the full-length scales of domestic walnut wood. The matte wood of the contoured handle scales is CNC-milled in a three-dimensional design. The coat of arms and name of the Tirpitz takes pride on the front. The sister ship of the legendary Bismarck was the largest battleship ever commissioned by the German Navy. Right after the end of World War II, a Norwegian company sent experts to salvage the ship’s wreck off the coast of Norway, in order to make the highly alloyed steel available for civilian purposes. Norwegian divers retrieved parts of the armoring of the Tirpitz just for Boker. Boker’s Damascus blacksmith took these pieces of living history and forged an exclusive and exceptional steel with a fascinating history. The mighty blade of hand-forged Damascus steel sports the pattern “Great Pyramid” in 300 layers, which makes this knife the highlight of any collection.

The combination of Tirpitz steel with carbon tool steel also makes for an extremely durable Damascus. With a Rockwell hardness of 61 to 63 HRC, it is equal to any everyday task. The blade is secured with a 0.06″ thick liner lock and opens with a removable thumb stud. With pocket clip (tip-up). It comes in a high-quality transparent frame case with a certificate of authenticity and is individually serial numbered.

Damascus Steel

Damascus steel is the name of a type of steel that was very popular in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age. It was named after the Syrian city of Damascus, a former trade center for knives and swords with this type of blade. Today, Damascus steel is not as widely used as stainless or carbon steel but still appreciated for its decorative exterior.

Damascus is a composite steel, i.e. a steel made from two or more steel bases with different characteristics. The finished product has a clearly visible texture of alternating layers of its base materials. Two or more types of steel are used to make a composite in order to achieve a finished product that combines their strengths. Damascus steel was developed to compensate for the disadvantages of steel as a material in the production of swords, knives and other weapons. Using a hard or soft steel to make blades resulted in specific advantages and disadvantages: Blades made from hard steel are very strong and retain their edge for a long time, but they are also brittle and quick to break. Blades made from soft steel, on the other hand, don’t break but bend and lose their edge quickly.

The combination of hard and soft steel typical for Damascus results in a finished product that doesn’t break (like soft steel) while still offering good edge retention (like hard steel). The base materials of Damascus steel are usually welded together. The steel layers are forge-welded according to a basic principle: Finer layers of steel are better and easier to join. It is not unusual to weld several hundred layers for one blade.

Today, Damascus steel no longer plays a role in blade production due to the availability of mono steel products (made from one type of steel) offering the same properties achieved in Damascus steel by combining two or more steel types. Damascus steel is still appreciated for its decorative exterior and long history.
